GREEN UP DAY, MAY 1, 2010, THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY

“Green Up Day” is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and the Town of Hyde Park welcomes you to celebrate by participating in any way you can to “green up” our great town!

Green Up Day – always the first Saturday in May - is a special day when Vermonters clean and spruce up their communities. You can call or email to reserve your special Green Up Day garbage bags during the early part of April and let us know which roads or areas of Hyde Park you’re planning to help clean up.  Then, when the bags come in to the Hyde Park Town Clerk’s office, you’ll be notified to come pick them up.  That way, you can choose to clean up areas before May 1 or on that morning.  All you have to do is fill your Green Up bag with roadside or waterway debris and leave the closed bag on the side of the road.  The Town Garage makes special trips around Hyde Park all day on Green Up Day, picking up the Green Up bags from roads all over Hyde Park.  You can also stop in the Hyde Park Town Clerk’s office during the last week of April to pick up your Green Up bags, but we can’t guarantee there will be enough if you don’t call or email to reserve them in advance!

During the 2009 Green Up Day on May 2, over 250 bags of trash and 125 abandoned tires were collected by about 150 residents of Hyde Park!  Many groups participated, too:

A special thanks to Duncan Nash for continuing the Green Up Day efforts over the past few years and helping to pass the torch to the new coordinator, Amy Holibaugh.

Vermont was the first state in the nation to designate a day for such cleaning of the entire state. Working together, we can keep our unique Green Up spirit growing for Vermont!  Green Up Vermont is a not-for-profit 501© (3) organization that works to enhance our state’s natural landscape and waterways and the livability of our communities by involving people in Green Up Day and educating about the benefits of a litter free environment.

With your help, we can continue our unique annual Vermont tradition of taking care of our beautiful landscape and promoting civic pride so our children grow up with Green Up.  For more information about state-wide activities, check out: www.greenupvermontorg.
To reserve your Green Up Day bags, email Amy Holibaugh at hydeparkgreenup@gmail.com or leave a message at 888-1386.

Mark your calendars! May 1, 2010 is the next scheduled “Green Up Day”!  Get your boots, grab your gloves, invite a few friends and come join us in our community to make Vermont
